product details
Emerson Rosemount 3101 Level Transmitter.
Introduction
The Emerson Rosemount 3100 Series Ultrasonic Level Transmitter represents a reliable, non-contacting measurement solution for continuous liquid level monitoring across industrial applications. Manufactured under the Emerson Rosemount brand, this family of ultrasonic level transmitters delivers cost-effective performance for storage tanks, effluent pits, buffer tanks, reservoirs, and open channel flow applications-2.
The series comprises three primary models: the Rosemount 3101 Level Transmitter—the entry-level unit designed for simple level measurement with a 4–20 mA analog output—alongside the Rosemount 3102 and Rosemount 3105, which offer enhanced capabilities including HART communication, volume calculations, and open channel flow measurement-.
Product Status Notice: The Rosemount 3100 Series (3101, 3102, and 3105) has been discontinued as a standard catalog offering. This technical article is provided for reference purposes to support existing users and legacy system maintenance. For new installations, consult your local Emerson representative for current replacement solutions-8.
Ultrasonic Measurement Principle
The Rosemount 3100 Series operates on time-of-flight ultrasonic technology. The transmitter, mounted above the liquid surface, emits ultrasonic pulse signals directed toward the liquid. These pulses reflect off the liquid surface, and the transmitter “listens” for the returning echoes-24.
The microprocessor-controlled electronics calculate the distance to the liquid surface based on the time delay between transmission and reception-13. For the Rosemount 3101 specifically, the transmitter computes the liquid depth (level) and outputs the result as a 4–20 mA analog signal proportional to that level-16.
A critical component of the measurement accuracy is the integral temperature sensor, which continuously monitors air temperature around the transmitter. Since the speed of sound in air varies with temperature, the transmitter automatically compensates the calculated distance to eliminate temperature-induced errors-.
Detailed Technical Specifications
General Specifications
| Parameter | Specification |
| Product Family | Rosemount 3100 Series Ultrasonic Level Transmitters |
| Model Numbers | 3101, 3102, 3105 |
| Product Status | Discontinued (legacy/reference only) |
| Measurement Principle | Ultrasonic, time-of-flight |
Measurement Range
| Model | Maximum Range |
| Rosemount 3101 | 26 ft (8 m) |
| Rosemount 3102 | 36 ft (11 m) |
| Rosemount 3105 | 36 ft (11 m) |
The usable measurement range begins at 1 ft (0.3 m) from the transmitter face for all models. The zone within 12 in. (0.3 m) of the transmitter face is the blanking distance—the sensor cannot reliably measure within this region-16.
Accuracy and Resolution
| Parameter | Rosemount 3101 | Rosemount 3102 / 3105 |
| Accuracy (<3.3 ft / 1 m) | ±0.2 in. (5 mm) | ±0.1 in. (2.5 mm) |
| Accuracy (>3.3 ft / 1 m) | ±0.5% of measured distance | ±0.25% of measured distance |
| Level Resolution | Better than 0.04 in. (1 mm) | Better than 0.04 in. (1 mm) |
Reference conditions for accuracy specifications: 68 °F (20 °C), 1013 mbar atmospheric pressure, 50% relative humidity, calm and stable water surface-1.

Installation Guidelines for Rosemount 3100 Series
Proper installation is essential for accurate measurement and long-term reliability. Follow these procedures:
Mounting Requirements
Mount Above Liquid – The transmitter must be mounted above the liquid surface using the provided 2-inch thread-16.
Vertical Alignment – Install as near vertical as possible to ensure strong echo return and maximum echo size received-16.
Avoid Metal Fittings – Mount in a non-metallic fitting or flange to prevent signal interference-16.
Avoid Electrical Noise – Keep transmitter away from sources of electrical noise-16.
Blanking Zone – Ensure maximum liquid level does not enter the 12-in. (0.3-m) blanking zone at the transmitter face-16.
Avoid Inlet Streams – Do not mount directly over inlet streams where turbulence may affect echo quality-16.
Electrical Installation
The transmitter connects to any suitable 24 Vdc power source using two-core, shielded cable-16. For models with HART communication (3102 and 3105 only), a 250 Ω (minimum), 0.25 W load resistor must be installed in the loop-.
